Pearl S. Buck was the daughter of American missionary parents, and spent the first seventeen years of her life in China. Teacher and missionary for the United Presbyterian Church (Smith College A.B., 1911), Thomson lived in China (1917-1949) with her husband, James Claude Thomson, chairman of the Chemistry Dept. at the University of Nanking. In the 1950s he taught at the International Christian University in Tokyo and traveled in Iran, Turkey, and Pakistan for the World Health Organization.
